Welcome!
I’m Susie Shapiro, founder and educator at Evergreen Life Learning and Evergreen Arts. I have been learning with young people for over thirty years as a mother, professional educator, and homeschooling parent. I am a lifelong learner, artist, and nature enthusiast, and I love sharing my passions and encouraging others in their own learning.
I am a children's rights advocate with a deep concern for the wellbeing of our world. I recognize how children's rights are connected to the larger picture of equity and social justice, and environmental justice. My mission is to implement practices that create more harmony in our lives, and by extention the wider communities of human and other than human beings. I believe that alternative approaches to education, especially where mindfulness, non-violent communication, and critical thinking are practiced, play a crucial role in helping to create this harmony.
Through my experience with various conventional and alternative learning environments, I have come to uphold student-led learning as the most empowering approach to education for young peoople. I believe a healthy education is about relationship building in an atmosphere of nurturing and trust where everyone can grow into their authentic selves. Being present for children, and showing them that you value their ideas and experiences is essential to creating an environment where they can truly thrive.
